DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – After I received word of Ian Perna’s passing, I was unsure how to cope with it. The best way was to share memories and here are some:
From Daytona Beach to St. Augustine, Fla., I think back on the times we shared the stage. They were at the following venues: Tir na nOg Irish Pub, The Pit Stop Bar, Bank & Blues, Jackie Knight’s Comedy Club and Ancient City Brewing.
While at the Tir na nOg Irish Pub, Ian helped me along with my journalism journey by allowing me to interview him. I remembered how he was not happy with his replies and wanted to do another one. However, I was happy the way he conducted himself. I remembered him telling me I was too witty for the superhero jokes, when I disguised myself as Wu-Man Chu. I took his advice and incorporated more hip-hop related jokes.
For Doug Stanhope’s appearance at Tir na nOg Irish Pub, I remembered when Ian appeared for the Comedy Killers’ after-party. A heckler took the stage and it did not end well for the heckler. I will not go into details into it. It was an interesting night, to say the least.
Thank you for opening the room with Jack Napier at The Pit Stop Bar. It was fun to perform there and we needed something to do on a Friday night. I remembered the time we went to Robbie O’Connell’s Pub, after one of them. A woman stated she knew me but I did not remember her. Plus, she hugged and kissed me. Then, everyone sang “Love Yourself” by Justin Bieber. The lady turned her attention to Ian, as Stephanie and a couple others danced. Ian tried to get my attention to save him from her but I stayed away. It felt like we were in “The Twilight Zone”.
We were part of the second showcase together at Bank & Blues and I was fortunate to be part of it.
Looking back at Jackie Knight’s Comedy Club, I remembered competing against Ian and Joe Lovece. Joe did not last long because of his material. Ian went over time and I held back. The whole thing ended in Ian’s favor, when he won.
Brian Thomas hosted the last time we shared the stage together at Ancient City Brewing, in Nov. It was great to see Ian and he will be missed.
