FLAGLER BEACH, Fla.—TJ and Ryan were one of the competitors at the independent artists competition at Finn’s Beachside Pub, on Aug. 19. The event was sponsored by Red Stripe Beer and the judges were from WQFB Surf 97.3 FM. They were the opening act, along with:  Next A’ Kin, Amy Denson, Bradley Griese, Michael Cooper, Shawn Pruner featuring Evan Falconnie, Kenny Gilliam and Jay Paski. Uncle Eddie and Robin was the direct support and Darrell Rae was the headliner. TJ Ward strummed the guitar and provided vocalist, Ryan McNair played the harmonica and provided vocals. Ward and McNair assisted each other with backup vocals.

Next A’ Kin’s vocalist and guitarist, Tony Paul Neal, introduced Ward and McNair to those in attendance. Ward mentioned how glad they were to be back performing at the venue. He joked how it was great to see the Pacific Ocean, to check if the audience was going to correct him by saying it was the Atlantic Ocean. As they performed a sound check, Ryan tested out the output of the sound by playing the intro to “Dueling Banjos” by Arthur “Guitar Boogie” Smith. It was made famous by the film, “Deliverance”.  Then, they began their set with “Soul On Fire”.

Ward walked backwards, prior to the start of “The Edge”. Feedback was heard from the speaker at the back of the stage. He returned to his microphone and stated how hot the sound was, due to the interference.  Next A’ Kin’s guitarist, Trey Geddings, quickly made his way to the stage to adjust the volume on the mixer. He brought his microphone, plugged it into McNair’s microphone cable and had him use it for the remainder of their show. As Ward strummed his guitar, McNair assisted him with the instrumentals by blowing his harmonica into the microphone.

Ward thanked the audience, before they continued their recital with “I Want More”. Then, he spoke of the bond he and McNair had formed. He complimented him on how he was a great musician and friend. During the song, one of Ward’s guitar strings snapped. Geddings offered Ward to play his guitar instead, they exchanged it and one of the stagehands rested Ward’s guitar away from the stage.

McNair and Ward continued with “Whisky Young Woman”. They ended their showcase with “Free My Mojo”, while attendees clapped along to the instrumental. Afterwards, they thanked everyone for attending.
