ATHENS, Ga. - Alia Ghosheh began her comedy career after meeting N.Y. comedian, Rob Shapiro. They met through a mutual friend, Susan Brehme Park. Shapiro mentioned he would be performing stand-up in Atlanta and invited Ghosheh. She purchased tickets and attended with her brother. The venue was closed, due to St. Patrick’s Day. They were issued refunds and they informed her Shapiro’s show was moved to The Glenwood.
While at The Greenwood, Ghosheh received free stuff including a scarf. She also sat next to all of the comics and photographed them all. She met comedian, Carlos Valencia, because he was able to get on the showcase. He later returned to Atlanta, for his “The Comedy Fluffer Tour”.
After going back to Athens, Ghosheh met Cindy Spice. Spice was the host of Comic Strip at The Globe Athens. Every time Ghosheh would attend, she photographed the comedians. Spice offered her two minutes of stage time. If she did well, the time would extend to five minutes.
Comedienne, Elizabeth Stone, knew Ghosheh’s name from the tagged photos on Facebook and she was surprised. Stone went onto say she could tell Ghosheh loved comedy because “she did not sit on the sidelines”.
Four months had passed, since the day Spice offered Ghosheh time on stage. When she first performed stand-up comedy, she felt a bit scared but more excited. She mustered up the courage, felt good about the set she wrote, went for it and she remembered doing great. She stated there was no other “feeling in the world like making people laugh.” After each performance of stand-up comedy she performed, she hoped those in attendance felt happier and learned something new from her point of view.
Ghosheh cited to Spice how it would be cool to have her own room. Spice offered her room at The Globe because she planned to move. Ghosheh changed the name to “Comic Strip Comedy Show”. The logo was designed by Akil Bjorn and they continue to work together on all of the comedy show fliers. After a year, they relocated to various venues. She produced shows at other establishments and performed on stage with Valencia.
Comedy specials and records Ghosheh mentioned were her favorites were by George Carlin. She continued to say it was because “he was a comedic genius”. Her favorite sketch shows were “Mad TV” and “Saturday Night Live”. Her favorite comedy film was “The Nutty Professor” (1996).
If Ghosheh could go on tour with any comedian, she chose Hollis Gillespie. She remembered reading her book, “Bleachy-Haired Honky Bitch”, and purchased the entire series. Last year—she performed at Flicker Theatre & Bar. The two met, it was a dream come true for Ghosheh because Gillespie was her hero. The past or present comedians she wanted to get roasted by were: George Carlin, Eddie Murphy, Wanda Sykes, David H.T. Rosen and Gabriel Iglesias.
Other forms of comedy Ghosheh plans to venture off into are acting and sketch shows. In the next five years—she hopes to be in the radio, television and film industry.
Online and social media, Ghosheh can be heard on ncwzradio.com’s “Saturday Morning Funnies” with Puddin’ and The Shanster. She portrays Savannah, a native of Ga. Her character “is a redneck news reporter who reports real stories with a comedic commentary”. Her Facebook pages can be liked at the following sites, Comic Strip Comedy Show and Comedy in Athens, Georgia. On Twitter, she can be followed at @GaComedy.
Every last Wednesday of each month, Ghosheh hosts comedy at Jerzees Sports Bar. Admission is $5, features one headliner and 10 other comics
