Journal. Journalism. Journeyman.
Ney and Laurence
As a concert journalist, one of Ney’s aspirations was to follow in his parent’s footsteps and obtain the American dream. He did not know which trail to blaze, until he centered himself on a month long journey in Cambodia. The concert posters which hung in Ney’s old room and the concert t-shirts he would constantly only marked where he went. They were never meant to determine where he was going.
Ashley Laurence, actress in the “Hellraiser” franchise, provided him the meaning to Ney’s first name. While having lunch, she defined it as: “It is a destination name. You don’t know where it came from but you know where you’re going.” Since then, he has always tried to find his way. In the same week, Clive Barker requested for Ney to stay as an artist.
It is at Barker’s studio is where he operates A Quarter and a Dream Pictures and where he writes his concert articles. He consolidates many pages of notes into 400 words.
In the beginning, Ney did not know how to obtain press credentials. He would walk into venues with a pen and note cards, take notes, and take photographs with his cellular phone. Since then--he knows how to obtain credentials, upgraded to journals, and has purchased an actual camera. However, he refuses to alter any of his photos for his concert articles.
Ney’s short-term goal is to write one article in each of Denver's venues and surrounding areas. After writing 150 articles in the Pacific Time Zone, he hopes to write 150 articles in the other time zones. For him, life is a journey and a destination. Wherever there is live music, he hopes to write about it then and there. He has written articles in art galleries, boardwalks, cafés, festivals, historic venues, motels, parking lots, record stores, state fairs, train stations and many more random places.
Ney is a one-man band himself. He continues to seek concerts from his e-mails and newspapers, submits his own press credentials, photographs his own concert photos, and writes his own articles. The majority of his articles are because he loves each and every musician’s music. His collection of memorabilia continues to grow.
