Augustana acoustically rocked a sold out Troubadour, on Feb. 2. Lauren Shera was the opening act.
Dan Layus is the lead vocalist and guitarist and David Lamoureux is the keyboardist and accordionist of Augustana. Layus also played the keyboard and harmonica and Lamoureux also provided backup vocals.
Prior to the arrival of Augustana, a security guard walked on stage and handed out photocopies of their drawings with autographs. As Layus and Lamoureux walked down the stairs and onto the stage, members of the audience cheered and took many photographs.
Layus began Augustana’s set with “New Morning” and “Mayfield”, as he provided percussion with his feet. Lamoureux later joined on keyboard, as he accompanied him with the beat.
During “Dust”, a male spectator sang along and managed to hold his note longer than he was supposed to. Layus paused, closed his eyes, smiled and the attendees laughed too. Later on, the spectators clapped rhythmically along with him. He felt the energy continue to build, even when the stage lights were dim.
Before “Love In the Air”, both members of Augustana shifted their positions on the stage with caution. Layus went onto play the keyboard and Lamoureux played the accordion, as they continued with “Boston”.
After “Twenty Years”, Layus took time to speak to those in attendance. He mentioned how great it was to be back home, in Los Angeles. He spoke of his loving family and the road to recovery from his sobriety. He thanked everyone for staying by his side through the years and the next songs were self-explanatory.
"Alive” was the last song, before Augustana’s encore. Layus reminisced about their last show at the El Rey, nine months before. Then, they left the stage and walked back up the stairs. After many chants and applause, they walked back into the audience’s glares. He joked how they tried to hide from them but could be easily be spotted through the room’s window. He gave praise to the fans, mentioned the difficulty of playing music acoustically and “Hurricane” ended their show.
“I Still Ain’t Over You”, “Just Stay Here Tonight”, “Need a Little Sunshine”, “Sweet And Low”, “Comeback Story”, “Borrowed Time”, “Easy Lessons are the Hardest to Learn”, “Steal Your Heart”, “Fire”, “On the Other Side”, “Meet You There”, “Youth is Wasted on the Young”, “Life Goes On”, “Sunday Best” and “Shot In The Dark” were also part of Augustana’s set.
