JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Butcher Babies brought their sharp form of metal to Freebird Live, on Sept. 9. They were the direct support, Battlecross was the opening act and GWAR was the headliner.
Heidi Shepherd and Carla Harvey are the vocalists, Henry Flury is the guitarist, Jason Klein is the bassist and Chris Warner is the drummer of Butcher Babies.
Warner appeared on stage first, sat behind his drum set and made faces between pieces of his drum set. He played an instrumental track and it was accompanied by rap lyrics. Flury and Klein soon made their way to the stage, with devil horns in the air while their right arms erected. Shepherd and Harvey appeared next and they began their performance with “Monsters Ball”.
Prior to “The Cleansing”, Shepherd spoke of how much room Butcher Babies had to work with and how confined it was. During the performance, she leaped onto the back of the barricades and performed. She went onto reach out her arms into the crowd, grasped hands and finished the song on stage. Afterwards—she placed one foot on stage, one on the barricade and said how she could provide vocals in the position for the rest of the night.
Shepherd said the next song, “Beer Drinkers & Hell Raisers”, was the best part of her night because it was when she was able to drink beer. After making the statement, the crowd cheered. Then, Butcher Babies continued on with the song. Shepherd sang the first half of the song’s title and Harvey would sing the second. The crowd participated and sang the second half of the song’s title, along with Harvey.
Before “Blonde Girls All Look The Same”, Shepherd reminisced about the time Butcher Babies wrote the song. She stated it was written six years, had been a long time since they performed it live, felt like performing it and joked how they were hoping to not forget how it went.
“Magnolia Blvd.” brought an end to Butcher Babies’ recital. Shepherd praised Battlecross for opening the show, asked everyone if they were ready to see GWAR and the crowd cheered in response. She continued by encouraging the onlookers to visit their merchandise booth, for they would be looking forward to meeting with them.
“The Mirror Never Lies”, “Igniter”, “Jesus Needs More Babies For His War Machine” and “Mr. Slowdeath” were also part of Butcher Babies’ set.
