What inspired you to perform stand-up comedy?
A whole bunch of things inspired me to start doing stand-up. Watching other comedians who I admired. Encouragement from friends and teachers who told me I was a funny writer. My constant need for creative fulfillment and validation from a roomful of strangers.
What was the feeling like, when you first performed stand-up comedy?
Terrifying. So much anxiety. Nothing else really prepares you for that experience. Not only do you have to stand by yourself on stage in front of a bunch of people—that alone is scary—but you have to say things that you came up with, AND those things have to be funny.
What are your favorite comedy specials and record albums?
I’m a big fan of Bo Burnham’s specials. And John Mulaney’s. I also really enjoyed Ali Wong: Baby Cobra. Lots of others. I dunno, I’d be better at a TV/movie question.
What are your favorite sketch shows, sitcoms and comedy films?
Hey, a TV/movie question! Sketch: SNL. Portlandia. Robot Chicken. Sitcoms: Arrested Development. Broad City. Rick and Morty. 30 Rock. Silicon Valley. Flight of the Conchords. South Park. Films: Groundhog Day. Office Space. Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. The Big Lebowski. Little Miss Sunshine. The Full Monty.
If you could go on tour with any comedian, which one would you choose?
Oh gosh, maybe Sarah Silverman or Maria Bamford? Some kick ass lady, that’s for sure.
If you could get roasted by five comedians (past or present), which ones would you choose?
I’m going to give the most boring answer to this question, but I never want to roast nor be roasted by anyone. I already think everything about me is terrible; I don’t need other people confirming it.
Which other forms of comedy would you like to venture off into?
I want to write comedy movies. I mean, I do write comedy movies. I want people to buy my scripts and make them into real movies.
What experience would you like for your audience to take with them, after a set is over?
“I never knew jokes about grammar could be so sexy.”
Where do you see your comedy career, in the next five years?
Assuming Trump doesn’t get elected and end the world as we know it, then I’ll still be writing and doing standup. Hopefully I will have grown some as an in that time entertainer, but at the rate I’m going, who knows. I mean, I just wrote “INT. BEDROOM - NIGHT” on Final Draft, so I think I’m going places.
