ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla.—Counting Crows took flight and landed at The St. Augustine Amphitheatre, on Aug. 2. They were the headlining act, Hollis Brown was the opener and Citizen Cope was the direct support.
Adam Duritz is the vocalist and pianist, David Bryson is the guitarist, Charlie Gillingham plays the accordion, keyboards and piano, Millard Powers plays the bass and piano, David Immerglück plays the guitar and mandolin and Dan Vickrey plays the lead guitar for Counting Crows. Bryson, Powers, Immerglück and Vickrey also assist with the backup vocals.
After Counting Crows began their recital with “Sullivan Street” and “Scarecrow”, they continued with “Mr. Jones”. During the opening notes, the crowd cheered as loud as they could and they played it at a rapid speed. At times, Duritz would suspend his microphone stand over the audience and had them sing along with him.
Prior to “Cover Up The Sun”—Duritz mentioned how his friend’s grandfather, Pedro, left Texas for Hollywood, Calif. He went onto say Pedro had been a singer, comedian and a dancer. With the three talents he had, he ended up being in many films co-starring with John Wayne. After he told the story—he dedicated the song to those in attendance who have moved out, pursued their passions and did something crazy with their lives.
Before “Holiday In Spain”, Duritz spoke of the many non-profit organizations there were at the venue. He spoke of how America was built on participation. He encouraged the onlookers to visit the tables set up outside to find out more information about each and every one of them. During the song—Counting Crows continued to provide the instrumental, as Duritz introduced each band mate to the audience and calling them a friend before each introduction.
Duritz mentioned Counting Crows had one more song for viewers. The sound technician played The Mamas and the Papas “California Dreamin’”. He went onto say they could stay around and sing along. Shortly after, he lifted the setlist from the stage and handed it to them. Meanwhile—Bryson, Immerglück, Gillingham, Powers and Vickrey threw guitar picks and other band merchandise into the crowd.
“Elvis Went To Hollywood”, “Goodnight Elisabeth”, Teenage Fanclub’s “Start Again”, “Omaha”, “Mrs. Potter’s Lullabye”, “God Of Ocean Tides”, “Blues Run The Game”, Bob Dylan's “You Ain’t Going Nowhere”, “A Long December”, “Hanginaround”, “Palisades Park” and “Rain King” were also part of Counting Crows’ set.
