JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Dirty Rotten Imbeciles (D.R.I.) will be rocking the stage at Harbor Tavern, on Dec. 9. Their tour began on Nov. 19 at Trees in Dallas and it will conclude on Dec . 12 at Churchill's Pub in Miami.
Spike Cassidy is the guitarist, Kurt Brecht is the vocalist, Walter “Monsta” Ryan is the drummer and Harald Oimoen is the bassist of D.R.I. They hail from Houston are on the Beer City Records roster.
The original lineup of D.R.I. formed on May 2, 1982. The band consisted of Cassidy on guitar, Brecht on vocals, Eric Brecht on drums and Dennis Johnson on bass. The Brecht’s brother’s father, nicknamed the “Madman”, knocked on the door of their practice space. He evacuated and called them names, many times over. One name which was often used was Dirty Rotten Imbeciles and the name stuck. Two months later, they would play their first show in Houston at Joe Star’s OMNI.
D.R.I.’s first EP, “Dirty Rotten EP”, was released in Nov. of 1982. It featured 22 songs, was 18 minutes long , pressed on a seven inch record and played at 33 revolutions per minute (rpm). There were only 1,000 made. By 1983, it was rereleased on a 12 inch version. The record went onto inspire other bands and they were dubbed the fastest band in the world.
After moving to San Francisco, there were lineup changes. Johnson parted ways with D.R.I., Sebastion Amok took his place and he was replaced by Josh Pappe. While residing in the city, they lived in their van and ate at soup kitchens. During the time, they were able to tour with the Dead Kennedys and toured with them on the “Rock Against Reagan” tour.
Lineups continued to change and studio and live albums were released, over time. In 1987--D.R.I.’s third album, “Crossover”, was released. It blended the genres of punk, hardcore and metal. The subgenre of the all the genres was formed and they became the innovators. They continued to release more studio and live albums, over the decades. Their music continued to bring them around the world and back again.
