FLAGLER BEACH, Fla. – Jezus Borgia and The Fisher Brothers were two acts that performed at the Fuego Del Mar open mic night, on Oct. 7. Borgia assisted J.C. Ortega with additional lyrics for one set and Andrew Bosscher for another. The Fisher Brothers were one of the opening acts, of the four hour event.
J.C. Ortega played the guitar and provided vocals with four of his original songs. Borgia was the lyricist, Travis Rudd assisted on the drums, Jenica Thorp played the fiddle Darrin Grinaldi was the bassist.
Between every set of verses or choruses, Borgia freestyled rap over the instrumentals to Ortega’s “Takin’ It Easy”, “Ganja Strain”, “Find Your Own Vehicle” and “8 o’clock in the Morning”. Throughout the set, Borgia shouted out a portion of the venue’s name and the crowd cheered.
Borgia returned a few sets later, to alternate lyrics with Andrew Bosscher. Bosscher complimented him on guitar and vocals. An upright bassist played with them and he chose to be anonymous. Maggie Burkett played the trombone, Bill Stewart struck the tambourine, Justin Gurnsey and Abraham 777 alternately played the congas, Jenica Thorp played the fiddle, Tyler Bergeron played the melodica and Terry Edwards was the lead guitarist.
Borgia would freestyle lyrics between verses and choruses, when Bosscher covered: Houndmouth’s “Honey Slider”, MGMT’s “Kids”, Bob Dylan’s “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door” and Outkast’s “Hey Ya”.
Kent Fisher is the drummer and Kevin Fisher is the vocalist and guitarist of The Fisher Brothers.
“Sleep Walk” by Santo & Jonny Farina was the first song The Fisher Brothers performed together. Kent Fisher began the song by drumming first. Kevin Fisher followed shortly and incorporated his acoustic guitar. After the song was brought to an end, Kevin Fisher spoke into the microphone and stated how “gorgeous” the evening was and how he had a good feeling it was going to turn out the way it did.
Kevin Fisher stated all of the songs he and Kent Fisher were all going to perform would be improvised. Kevin Fisher went onto say it was how musicianship gets improved. Then, The Fisher Brothers started to play the first improvised song.
Shortly after wrapping up the first improvised song, Kent Fisher walked to the front of Kevin Fisher. He brought miniature versions of drum sticks, struck the frets of Kevin Fisher’s guitar and brought their portion of the weekly open mic’ night to an end.
