FLAGLER BEACH, Fla.—Kenny Gilliam was one of the competitors at the independent artists competition at Finn’s Beachside Pub, on Aug. 19. The event was sponsored by Red Stripe Beer and the judges were from WQFB Surf 97.3 FM. He was the opening act, along with: Next A’ Kin, Amy Denson, Bradley Griese, Michael Cooper, Shawn Pruner featuring Evan Falconnie, Jay Paski and TJ and Ryan. Uncle Eddie and Robin was the direct support and Darrell Rae was the headliner.
Next A’ Kin’s vocalist and guitarist, Tony Paul Neal, introduced Gilliam to the spectators. After he parted the stage, Gilliam spoke into the microphone and thanked the radio station for judging the competition. As he looked around the venue, he noticed those representing Red Stripe Beer and he said he was looking forward to his first beer from the company. Then, he began his recital with “She Left Me Today”.
Gilliam thanked the crowd, after he brought “She Left Me Today” to an end. Then, he spoke of the sea of people in attendance and how he was overwhelmed by the size. He was vocal about how it grew from when he was waiting to go on to perform and during the performance of his first song. Shortly after, he introduced “Right Before Good-bye”. During the song—he stepped away from the microphone and rocked back and forth, as he strummed his guitar. He approached the microphone, provided lyrics and brought an end to the song.
Prior to “Midnight Love”, Gilliam stated he had better do a bar song because of the setting of the venue. He went onto speak briefly and started the song. As he did with “Right Before Good-Bye”—he stepped away from the microphone, rocked back and forth with his heels on the ground and performed the instrumental. Then, he accompanied the tunes with the lyrics.
When Gilliam introduced the final song of his performance, “Samcro”, he stated it only took him 20 minutes to write song. He mentioned he had written it months prior to the series premiere of the FX television show, “Sons Of Anarchy”. He spoke to the audience to see if they had watched the show, they would figure the theme of the song. A few members of the audience made their way to the open area of the venue, they brought out their smartphones and recorded him. Afterwards, he thanked everyone.
