DENVER – Kyle Burtman is a stand-up comedian and hosts comedy open mic nights in Denver. He hails from Norwood, Mass.
Burtman’s inspiration to perform stand-up comedy comes from the healing factor it brings. He loves helping people, seeing people smile and laugh through his humor. His inspiration also comes from the late comedian, George Carlin. He feels he can deliver a powerful message to those who listen.
When Burtman first took the stage to perform stand-up comedy, he remembered his first set was filled with puns and wordplay. He remembered the feeling was a rush. The audience’s reaction to his set was a mixture of groans and chuckles. With the combination of the emotions he felt and the reaction from the crowd, he was addicted to comedy and was hooked.
"Weird Al" Yankovic’s “Running With Scissors” and “Bad Hair Day” are two of Burtman’s favorite comedy albums. His favorite comedy specials are anything by Carlin from the 1990s and beyond. He states Dave Attell’s “Captain Miserable” as his favorite too.
“Saturday Night Live” from the 1990s and Mad TV from the 2000s are some of Burtman’s favorite comedy sketch shows. His current favorites are: “Bob and David”, “Portlandia” and “The Charaters”. His favorite sitcoms are “Louie” and “Silicon Valley”. His favorite comedy films are: “Team America: World Police”, “South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut”, “Shawn of the Dead”, “Hot Fuzz” and anything by Mel Brooks.
If Burtman can go on tour with any comedian, he chooses Steven Wright or Ben Kronberg. He wants to pick Wright’s brain. As for Kronberg, he can learn more by watching him perform every night. He pictures him as being a really nice person. If he can get roasted by comedians past or present, he chooses Jeff Ross and Greg Giraldo because they have “amazing skill” in the field. He chooses Andres Becerril, E.D. Miller, Cal Sheridan, Will Mierzwa and Jeremy Pysher because they know him the best.
Other forms of comedy Burtman wants to be part of are: improv, sketch, script writing, joke writing, acting and gimmick shows.
In five years, he wants to go on tour and be a headliner. The experience he wants his audience to take with them after a set is over is for them to think more.
