COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Matthew Chapman is a stand-up comedian currently residing in Colorado Springs, Colo. He is part of the troupe, Cut It Out—alongside Pueblo, Colo. comedians, Paul Rosales and John Bueno. Fellow Colorado Springs comedian, Evan Plys, rounds up the four-piece. While Chapman is away from the stage, he produces music.
Chapman’s inspiration to perform stand-up comedy came from watching comedians on the Showtime cable network. When he was growing up, he watched 15 minute comedy routines between each film the network showed. After watching the comedians perform, he stated it was where he first received the bug to go on stage and try it out for himself.
During Chapman’s first time performing comedy, he was overcome with the feeling of self-doubt and he shook. He stated he was convinced he sounded similar to Christopher Walken with cerebral palsy. Thinking back at it, he stated everything felt as if it was moving in slow motion.
When it comes to favorite comedy specials and record albums, Chapman’s favorites during his upbringing included anything by: Sam Kinison, Eddie Murphy, Bill Cosby’s “Himself”, Eddie Griffin, Martin Lawrence and Chris Rock. He later discovered: Dennis Pennis, Stewart Lee, Noel Fielding and many more British comedians. His all-time favorite and biggest comic inspiration was and will always be Richard Jeni. He called him a pure a genius and most underrated comedian ever.
Chapman stated he did not have a favorite comedy film or sitcom. He enjoyed sketch comedy shows. His favorites include “Kids In The Hall” and “Mr. Show”. If he could go on tour with any comedian, he chose Duncan Trusell because they shared the same views on the occult. In the comedy tradition of a roast, he stated he could get roasted by anyone from the past or present. He could have anyone roast him, as long as he could reciprocate.
In the next five years—Chapman believes he can he achieve anything as long as he comes across self-belief, applies himself and puts the work in. He plans to venture off into the writing process of it all including: jokes, short stories and sketches. He believes the writing process is where the comedy is at. After a set is over, he wants his audience to take with them the feeling of “what the…”
