PUEBLO, Colo.—Pamla May Sterner began her comedy career through ventriloquism, at the age of 12. Through the acts and years, it helped her overcome her shyness.
When Sterner resided on the east coast of the country, she pursued a career in stand-up comedy. She gave it a try—while in the country’s capital and during her four year stint. Her first time performing there was “surprisingly comfortable”. It took place in a comedy room in Md., she recalled the audience was great. She stated her transition from being a ventriloquist to performing stand-up comedy was a natural step.
Sterner was inspired by Carol Burnett, Lily Tomlin, George Carlin, Mitch Hedberg and Robin Williams. If she had the ability to go on tour with comedians/comediennes past or present, she chose: Abby alt, ShaNae Ross, Melissa McCarthy and her son, Douglas Sterner. She chose him because she needed a “token male” to be included in the lineup. If she was to get roasted by past or present comics, her dream lineup would include: Carol Burnett, Lily Tomlin, Douglas Sterner, Carlin, Hedberg and Williams.
Material Sterner uses in her routines are inspired by her age, her family members and work experiences. Accomplishing the feats of ventriloquism and stand-up comedy, Sterner hopes to participate in a sitcom and make improvements in her improvisational skills. Other than performing comedy on stage—she loves to spend time singing at karaoke spots around town and interacting with her grandkids. She hosts a writing club in Pueblo, Colo. Writers, as well as comedians gather at her home or at a local business to discuss how they can improve their craft. Through the outlet, she hopes to discover and introduce new comedians to the city.
Over the next five years, Sterner hopes to continue to run a few more comedy rooms in Pueblo, Colo. She states she truly enjoys hosting them. Currently, she works with a few venues under her imprint, Pueblo PFunny. They include: Charlie’s Tavern, The Coyote Grille and J Michael’s Union Avenue Pub. As for Colo.’s comedy scene as a whole, she hopes it continues to grow and comedians throughout the state will want to perform in Pueblo, Colo. Otis, Sterner’s ventriloquist dummy, has his own page on facebook and it can be accessed by clicking here. She is always updating it and hopes to be his running mate, during the 2016 presidential campaign run.
