GAINESVILLE, Fla. – ACCENT Speakers Bureau will host an evening with R.L. Stine at University Auditorium, on Oct. 24. The doors will open at 7 p.m. and the event takes place at 8 p.m. It is free and open to the public. Students with a valid identification card from University of Florida will receive two tickets. The rest will be made available to the general public, on the day of.
Stine was born in Columbus, Ohio, on Oct. 8, 1943. In 1949, he discovered an old typewriter and wrote.
During Stine’s grade school days, he was the class clown. He graduated from Ohio State University, 1965. In 1967, he moved out to New York and became a writer for Scholastic. His books included: “How To Be Funny”, “The Sick of Being Sick”, “101 Creepy Creature Jokes” and created “Bananas” magazine. In 1969, he married Jane Waldhorn. Together—they formed the publishing company, Parachute Press.
“Blind Date” was Stine’s first teen horror novel and it debuted in 1986. His Fear Street chain began in 1989 and included: “The New Girl”, “The Surprise Party”, “The Overnight”, “The Wrong Number”, “Missing”, “The Sleepwalker”, “Haunted”, “Halloween Party”, “The Stepsister”, “Ski Weekend” and more.
Sequence of Stine’s Goosebumps books were: “Welcome To Dead House”, “Monster Blood”, “Say Cheese And Die!”, “The Best Friend”, “The Curse Of The Mummy’s Tomb”, “Let’s Get Invisible!”, “Night Of The Living Dummy”, “The Girl Who Cried Monster”, “Welcome To Camp Nightmare”, “The Ghost Next Door” and countless others. They sold over 300 million copies in the U.S. and translated into over 30 languages.
“Goosebumps” spawned a television show and was the number one kids show, from 1992 to 1995. From 1993 to 1995—Stine was the bestselling author in America and held The Guinness Book of World Records, as the bestselling series author in history. “The Haunting Hour” started as a collection of books and became a television show, in 1998. It won three Emmy Awards for Most Outstanding Children’s Show.
Macmillan published more of Stine’s books, in 2011. After his grandson was born—he wrote his first picture book, “Little Shop of Monsters”, in 2014. Marc Brown (“Arthur”) was the illustrator. In 2015, Jack Black portrayed him in “The Goosebumps Movie” and was the #1 film in America. In 2016, there was a new succession of books published called “Goosebumps Slappyworld”.
