ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Shea Birney held his album release party at Planet! Sarbez!, on May 26. He was the headliner, Uncle Marty was the opening act and The WillowWacks was the direct support. Birney played the acoustic guitar and provided vocals. Daniel Hughes assisted on drums, Micah Gilliam played the electric guitar and Lauren Gilliam struck the bass.
Birney took the stage and walked up barefoot to the microphone, with his guitar in hand. He greeted those in attendance and stated he was going to play a few songs for them. After being welcomed with cheers, he began his performance with “Stuck”. Every so often, he tapped his foot as he performed.
Prior to starting “Beautiful Mess”—Birney stated it was written for someone important and how someone might appear to have everything together on the outside. However, it was okay to ask for help to maintain their well-being. He went onto say the song could be heard on his latest album, “The Curtain Is Drawn”.
Hughes approached the drums to assist Birney, prior to “Weights + Curtains”. Birney invited Micah Gilliam to assist him and had him play the electric guitar and Lauren Gilliam played the bass. They would remain on stage to play alongside with him, until the start of “To All of This”.
Before “Calcified”, Birney stated the song was a new one he had written and it was not on the album he was celebrating. He joked when after listening to the being performed live and after they have parted the venue, they would crave the song even more. After the song came to an end, he performed “John Audubon”. He stated it was about a man who shot over 50 birds, kept them as mementos and it inspired the song.
After Birney finished “The Great Escape”, some of those in attendance yelled for an encore. He picked up his guitar and granted their request. To end the evening, he performed “To All of This”. His brother, John Birney, stood on stage and sang in Micah Gilliam’s old microphone. John Birney waved his arms for others to join and three local musicians took him up on his offer including: Amy Hendrickson, Chelsea Saddler and Lauren Gilliam. Prior to the bridge, the audience took over and sang for him.
“What Will Complete Us”, “Coffee”, “Revelry”, “New Heart” and “Fragments of Soul” were also part of Birney’s set.
