ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – “Confessions of the Corazon: A Night of Storytelling” took place at the Corazon Cinema and Café, on Sept. 27. It was hosted by Sareth Ney and the featured storyteller was Kathy Kniery. Storytellers included: Robin Mahonen, Uncle Eddie, Natalie Beltrami, David Fussell and Betty Fess.
Ney’s story was turning $25 into $5,000. He came up with a concept of building a fan base and selling business cards. He was trying to raise funds for his hometown. He had 1,000 business cards printed for $27 and those in need sold them for $5 each.
Mahonen spoke of her upbringing in New York. Her family received a duckling from two children in the neighborhood. Mahonen and her siblings named it Quack Quack. A dog discovered the duck, there was an altercation and some feathers were missing. The duck’s feather grew back in pink.
Uncle Eddie stated to the audience he was not a storyteller but a singer/songwriter. He wrote a fictional song between marriages. He made sure the audience was well aware his tune was fictional and he was single. As he sang the song, the audience laughed every so often.
Beltrami’s story had elements of fact. She spoke of the time she was involved with a man. They were involved in barbecuing, 20 years ago. They competed in 50 barbecuing contests throughout the U.S. They came across a three legged pig and how he earned his wooden leg.
Fussell spoke of how his father taught him how to introduce himself to others. He continued with the different regions of the south he resided, during his upbringing. He told stories from times of his life, from when he encountered a mule to when he saw a ghost.
Fess spoke of taking a storytelling course at University of North Florida with a friend of hers. She told the audience of how she was raised to become a good person. Then–she talked about her siblings, their interactions and how her mother was involved in each scenario.
Kniery talked about the time she was a school teacher in Ill. She remembered seeing a man drop his wallet at a parking lot of a mall. Two dollars were in there, a picture and a letter was found inside. The letter brought two long, lost lovers together.
