ORLANDO, Fla. – “The Hateful Eight” Panavision Super 70 Roadshow will be screened at Waterford Lakes and Downtown Disney, from Dec. 24 through Dec. 31. “The Hateful Eight” is Quentin Tarantino’s eighth film. It stars Samuel Jackson, Kurt Russell, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Walton Goggins, Demian Bichir, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen and Bruce Dern. It will be screened in 100 theaters and the digital projection will begin on Dec. 31. It took 18 months to plan.
Paying homage to films of the 1950s and 1960s, “The Hateful Eight” Panavision Super 70 Roadshow will be featured in the “largest cities and grandest theaters”. The version of the film will be longer than the theatrical release. Each screening will include a musical overture to begin the film, a 12-miniute intermission between acts and a souvenir program. Tarantino and a few stars of the film will be making surprise guest appearances in select cities.
Filmed in the aspect ratio of 2.76:1—the version of the film viewed at “The Hateful Eight” Panavision Super 70 Roadshow, it allowed the display to be wider and more detailed. Nowadays, films have been filmed with the ratios of either 1.85:1 or 2.39:1. It was filmed by cinematographer, Robert Richardson (“JFK”, “The Aviator”, “Hugo”). Film was provided by Kodak, Fotokem assisted with lab work and prints and Panavision supplied the production equipment. Projectionists for “The Hateful Eight” Panavision Super 70 Roadshow were trained. “We trained new people and brought people out of retirement who did it years ago,” producer Richard Gladstein stated.
“The thing about the roadshows is that it made movies special,” Tarantino said of “The Hateful Eight” Panavision Super 70 Roadshow. “It wasn’t just a movie playing at your local theater. They would do these big musical productions before the normal release of the film. You would get a big colorful program. It was a presentation. They would play a Broadway show overture version of the soundtrack. If you’re going to shoot your movie and release it in 70mm, it’s really the way to go: twenty-four frames a second flickering through a projector, creating the illusion of the moment.”
