ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The WillowWacks helped celebrate Shea Birney’s album release party at Planet! Sarbez!, on May 26. They were the direct support, Uncle Marty was the opening act and Birney was the headliner. Micah Gilliam played the acoustic guitar and Lauren Gilliam strummed the ukulele for two two. They both shared vocal duties.
Prior to The WillowWacks beginning their concert with “Jelly Beans”, Micah Gilliam greeted the crowd and introduced themselves to them. He went onto say how excited he was to be part of the evening’s festivities. He said the album being released by Birney sounded “really good” because he had a sneak peek before everyone else. Plus, Micah Gilliam cited he had taken part in bringing it into fruition. As the Gilliams played the opening instrumental, Lauren Gilliam whistled and sang the first set of lyrics.
Lauren Gilliam thanked the audience for their cheers, which followed their opening number. Before the start of The WillowWacks’ second song “I See You”, she said the song was on their most recent record. As Micah Gilliam played the opening instrumental, the Gilliams harmonized and sang together. As she played her ukulele—she tapped her right foot, every so often. After the song came to an end, she removed her capo.
As Micah Gilliam readjusted his capo on his acoustic guitar prior to “Comes Back Deep”, Lauren Gilliam asked the spectators if they were ready to see Birney perform songs from his newest record. They cheered in response and she replied they were all in for a good night. She went onto say the song was the first they wrote together and how it was about being far away.
Before the start of “Mountain Jumper”, Lauren Gilliam mentioned the song was written by a friend of theirs and how much she enjoyed it. They followed the performance by showcasing “Anna’s Angel”.
After Micah Gilliam asked what the current time was, he displayed his sense of humor and spoke of the story behind “Ideal Man”. He entertained the crowd by saying how perfect he was for Lauren Gilliam. She replied she was not going to disagree with him.
“The Lullaby” would bring an end to The WillowWacks’ set. Lauren Gilliam stated it would be a much quieter song and how much the song had meant to them. As they performed, spectators helped quiet the room by hushing those who were too loud.
