PALM COAST, Fla.—Thom Shepherd performed at a private party at Canopy Walk, on April 11. He provided vocals and strummed the guitar.
Before Shepherd began his recital with “Wasn’t Gonna Drink”, he spoke of the drive he had to take to get from Lakeland, Fla. to Palm Coast because he had a concert the night before. His global positioning system (GPS) stated it would only take two hours and five minutes but it took him to the wrong highway [Highway 4] and he spent an extra hour on the road, as he strapped his guitar in place. When he arrived at the venue, he was asked if he would like a beer and his response was “absolutely”. He played a few notes and asked if the sound was projecting properly. The audience said it did and he went onto say his tuner was not working properly and had to ask. He placed the capo on one of the frets of his guitar and played. After the song came to an end, the host stated there were plenty of “cold ones” available for him to consume.
Prior to the start of “Country Squire”, Shepherd spoke of his upbringing. He stated he was from St. Louis, his father worked for General Electric and made light bulbs and how his family had three station wagons. He said his family was not well off and all of the cars were used. He remembered his mother wanting an Oldsmobile Cutlass and his father bought her one, it was the station wagon version, remembered it was light blue and said they were known as the “nerds of the neighborhood”.
“Sand In Her Shoes” brought an end to Shepherd’s first set, after one of the hosts gave him a sign for an intermission. He mentioned it was about his friend’s neighbor’s wife. He said everything Shepherd described about the his late wife was perfect and he hardly knew her. In the eulogy, they said she loved the beach and always had sand in her shoes. Afterwards—he cited there was a music video for the song, it was available to view on YouTube, his girlfriend played the woman in the video and it was filmed in 2011.
“Where I’m From”, “The Texas Way”, “Only Way He Knew How”, “Redneck Yacht Club”, “Pier Pressure” and “ Always Saturday Night” were also part of Thom Shepherd’s first set.
