JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Trampled By Turtles Fla. trek ended with Mavericks Live, on May 13. They were the headliner and The Devil Makes Three was the direct support. There was no opening act.
Dave Simonett is the guitarist and lead vocalist, Tim Saxhaug is the bassist, Dave Carroll is the banjoist, Erik Berry is the mandolinist and Ryan Young is the fiddler of Trampled By Turtles. Saxhaug, Carroll, Berry and Young assist with backup vocals. They were accompanied by cellist, Eamonn McLain, and a string quartet.
Stage lights dimmed, as the gathering cheered. Trampled By Turtles made their way onto the stage and Simonett waved his right arm above his head to salute the spectators. Then, they began their performance with “Come Back Home”.
Simonette mentioned one of Trampled By Turtles’ favorite artists, Prince, had passed away recently. Saxhaug paid homage to him as he provided vocals for “Nothing Compares 2 U”. Some of the onlookers sang along, as purple lights shined on from behind them.
“Wait So Long” followed afterwards. McLain, Carroll and Berry led the band with an opening instrumental. As they did so, the crowd roared and some raised their arms. As Simonett sang, they sang along with him until the end.
After “Walt Whitman” came to a conclusion and Trampled By Turtles performed “New Orleans”, an audience member in the Very Important Person (VIP) section stated the performance alone of “Walt Whitman” was worth the price of admission he had paid for. The viewers cheered on Berry, as he performed a mandolin solo.
In-between “New Son/Burnt Iron”, Simonett thanked those in attendance. Young and Carroll exchanged their instruments for new ones. As they did so, their touring string quartet took the platform and sat behind Trampled By Turtles. After getting comfortable, the instrumental chimed in. As the music was heard, Ryan and Carroll instructed them when to come in. Later, Carroll stepped aside for them to get exposure to the occupiers of the venue. They would play with the band, until the start of the encore.
“Wild Animals” was the last song, prior to Trampled By Turtles. Cheers and applause were heard, while they were backstage. A stagehand handed them their instruments and played two more songs.
“Stranger”, “The Darkness and the Light”, “Repetition”, “Hollow”, “Sounds Like A Movie”, “Victory”, “Codeine”, “Empire”, “Ghosts”, “Midnight on the Interstate” and “Alone” were also part of Trampled By Turtles set.
