ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Uncle Marty started the night of music for Shea Birney’s album release party at Planet! Sarbez!, on May 26. He was the opening act, The WillowWacks was the direct support and Birney was the headliner. Uncle Marty played the keyboard and provided the vocals.
Before Uncle Marty began his recital with “Baby, I Love You”, he welcomed everyone to Birney’s album release party. After performing a few microphone checks, he stated he was happy to be part of the evening’s bill. He mentioned summer was approaching, how the state of Fla. would become hotter, everyone would move in a slower pace and people would be able to find him on the beach in the St. Augustine area. He tapped his foot a few times, as he played the opening instrumental to the song.
“Visions of You” was the second song Uncle Marty performed. As he played his keyboard, he closed his eyes, leaned back, kept his foot on the pedal beneath his keyboard and made various facial expressions as he played the keys. Afterwards—he thanked the audience, grabbed his beverage, took a drink, placed it near the left of his chair and continued with “Marty on the Radio”.
“Know Love” continued Uncle Marty’s performance. First, he introduced the song’s title to the crowd. He said the song was more about understanding love more than learning how to love. He continued by saying how sweet and precious it was. Then, he performed the song. As he played the instrumental break—he continued to make various facial expressions, similar to when he had performed “Visions of You”. After the song came to an end, he thanked the audience and immediately went into “Dusty Trail”.
Prior to “Moving Forward”, Uncle Marty took time out to what inspired the lyrics to the song. He asked the onlookers if they ever had trouble coming up with money to pay rent. Then, they cheered in response to his question. He followed by saying it was about being late on rent. He placed his left foot on the pedal beneath his keyboard and manipulated the sound.
After “Diamond in my Eye”—Uncle Marty removed his hat and glasses, he wiped the sweat of his face with both of his forearms. He granted Birney’s request to play “Waste My Time”, stated he was “stoked” to see The WillowWacks perform and ended with “Romaine Lettuce”.
