Vertical Horizon took the field and a stand against bullying at Security Service Field, on Aug. 17. They headlined the event, Stand Up. Speak Out: A Concert to End Bullying in Colorado Springs. The BottomLine, Brian Jarvis, Brendan James, Taylor Watson and Devyn Rush were the other musical acts.
Matt Scannell the vocalist and guitarist, Ron Lavella is the drummer, Donovan White is the guitarist and Jeff Jarvis is the bassist of Vertical Horizon. White and Jarvis provided backup vocals.
After Vertical Horizon was introduced—a voice was heard, welcomed those in attendance and an instrumental soon followed. As they approached the stage, they waved to the audience and were welcomed with cheers. Afterwards, they began their recital with “Save Me From Myself”.
Before “Broken Over You”—Scannell spoke of the time he played baseball and failing to reach home plate, after hitting a home run. He joked of the distance between Vertical Horizon and the crowd. He said it was a “therapy session” and allowed him to “bare his soul”. Then, he mentioned the song was available as a free download on their website and it was the first single off of their upcoming album, "Burning the Days".
Lavella rapidly struck his cymbals, as he started “We Are”. He was soon accompanied by the rest of Vertical Horizon. As he, White and Jarvis slowed down the tempo—Scannell began to sing a cover of Pink Floyd’s “Comfortably Numb”. Shortly after, he followed it with a guitar solo, picked up the tempo and coming back around again with “We Are”.
Scannell reminisced about growing up in Mass., before Vertical Horizon performed “Best I Ever Had (Grey Sky Morning)”. He spoke of the absence of country music and how his musical influences were mainly Rush and James Taylor. He went onto speak of how country musician, Gary Allen, turned the song into a country hit.
Prior to ending the show with “Everything You Want”, Scannell spoke of the song’s writing process. He remembered living in N.Y. in a time where he couldn’t afford to reside there. He went onto play the instrumental introduction, the second set of instrumentals and sang a portion of the lyrics. Between each developmental stage and explanation, the crowd cheered.
“Finding Me”, “I’m Still Here”, “Won’t Go Away”, “Send It Up”, “All is Said and Done” and “You’re a God” were also part of Vertical Horizon’s set.
