Building up to Halloween 2011, I didn’t know what I was going to be for Halloween. Special effects and makeup artists, Cris Alex and Stephen Imhoff, suggested since I had my run in with members of the Wu-Tang Clan, I should be "Wu-Man". I told them it sounded a lot like “Woman”. No offense to the female gender or the Wu-Tang Clan but I could not have that, since I am a “Man”.
I let the idea linger for a minute and I thought to myself, how can I bring this character to life? I have seen members of the Wu-Tang Clan perform live, many times. I also have several of their concert shirts, as part of my wardrobe. I noticed one that had their logo had taken up most of the shirt. In the back of it, it read “C.ash R.ules E.vertyhing A.round M.e” ("C.oncerts R.ule E.verything A.round M.e, by the way). I thought that was perfect. That would be my Superman-style logo.
At that time, I had dark jeans and somewhat yellow Converse All Star shoes. I bought some material from Jo-Ann’s Fabrics & Crafts, to make a cape. I spent a few days cutting and ironing each member of the Wu-Tang Clan’s logos. At first, I forgot to add Cappadonna’s logo. I wanted the original nine members on there. I also had a black masquerade mask that was given to me at The Chit Chat Club. I painted the top part yellow and black and a Wu-Tang Clan logo between the eyes, like RZA’s mask. Wu-Man Chu was created but it was not much. With time, he evolved.
My friend, Kevin Perkins, Jr., had moved to Los Angeles to attend a music school. He loves Danny Carey, the drummer of TOOL, VOLTO!, and BubbaTRON. He mentioned how much of an influence he was. I knew he was in VOLTO! but Kevin didn't. I asked him if he wanted to go and I purchased us tickets. I tested out my costume for the first time before we walked into The Baked Potato. We took pictures near a restaurant and posted it on facebook and it received many “Likes”. Then, we walked Ventura Boulevard and it was welcomed by more people. I can recall the Super Mario Bros. being there, not the real ones. That would have been odd.
We stood in line and waited for the doors to open. It was a bit cold but the material of the cape kept me warm. John Ziegler, the guitarist of VOLTO!, asked if anyone was wearing any costumes. He could not see me because of the lighting. Dark Darker was lurking in the shadows, like Darkwing Duck.
After the show, I put on my costume. Kevin and I met Danny Carey, for the first time. He had great things to say about my costume. We talked briefly because he had a lot of fans that knew him from TOOL and we didn’t want to occupy most of his time. Kevin could not believe he shook Danny Carey’s hand. I could not believe I introduced myself (ahem… Dark Darker) to him, as Wu-Man Chu.
