Sareth Ney (SN): What inspired you to perform stand-up comedy?
Ian Gutoskie (IG): I was an insanely shy child and my family moved around a lot. Then--I remembered at around the age of 12, watching the Montreal Comedy Festival. I would watch Tommy Davidson, Harland Williams, Richard Jeni, Norm Macdonald, a bunch of others and looked at the people just hanging onto their every word. So, I started to memorize their material and use it on the other kids in grade seven. It worked! I then started to develop my own sense of humor. |

Sareth Ney (SN): What inspired you to perform stand-up comedy?
Dickey Bill Wagner (DBW): As a kid, I moved around a lot and I made people laugh to make friends. It was something that I enjoyed and when people were laughing, I get encouraged to get even more outrageous. I decided to give stand-up comedy a try, about nine years ago. It has been a big work in progress. |

Sareth Ney (SN): What inspired you to perform stand-up comedy?
Lauren Dufault (LD): I've always been a goofy girl. Growing up, I was an athlete. So, I really didn’t give myself a chance to try it until my mid-20s. I was inspired by the passing of Robin Williams. I thought about how much he made the world laugh and I thought it would be fun. My second inspiration came from “Game of Thrones”, season six and episode nine: “Battle of the Bastards”. After watching that show, I realized the amount of emotional influence it had on me (not in the most positive way). Everyone knows that episode as quite intense. Like the show, I wanted to be able to influence people but in an empowering way. I live for the laughs! |

Sareth Ney: What inspired you to perform stand-up comedy?
Katie Bowman: I always wanted to do comedy. I was never given a “how to” process until after college, when I went on a date to an improv show. I was hooked on the idea but scared to show up; in fear the guy I dated was going to be there. How silly, huh? Then, an ex-guy friend and I were talking about funny new shows and I told him about “Broad City”. His reply was, "No way! I am so sick of girls that aren't cute trying to do comedy." Obviously, he was an idiot. A couple unsuccessful dates later—I thought, "What do I have to lose? Comedy needs more women." |

What inspired you to perform stand-up comedy?
I've always been a fan ever since I discovered my first cassette tape of Howie Mandel, when I was a kid. Over the years the whole art form just fascinated me. I suppose I can be philosophical and say that since I grew up as a middle child, it was always tough for me to grab people's attention. So, the idea of being on stage where people HAD to pay attention was very attractive to me. I think more than that, I just like making people laugh and the thrill of being on stage in front of people. |

What inspired you to perform stand-up comedy?
I always wanted to find my passion. After graduating from the University of Maryland with a Finance and International Business major, I realized that wasn't it! I was always told I was funny, and always loved making people laugh. So without telling anyone, I took an improv comedy class and that's when I realized I wanted to be a comedian. |

Sareth Ney: What inspired you to perform stand-up comedy?
Iceberg: It was definitely to upgrade my girlfriends. In actuality, I moved to Los Angeles in late 2015. My roommate signed up for acting classes. He suggested I go too but it was too expensive. He dared me to try stand-up and on Feb. 20, 2016, I gave it a shot. |

Sareth Ney: What inspired you to perform stand-up comedy?
Anthony Marsalisi: I was inspired by many, many funny people. Actors like Alan Alda in “M.A.S.H.”, the original “Saturday Night Live” (“SNL”) stars (John Belushi, etc.) and comics (Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy, Bill Cosby, George Carlin and Rodney Dangerfield). It wasn't until my wife and daughter believed in me. I started to believe that I could do it too. |

BOSTON – “Deadair” Dennis Maler’s inspiration to perform stand-up comedy came from watching stand-up comedy specials, during his upbringing. When he first attempted stand-up, he was in the fourth grade. He remembered starting his routine with a prop joke and it did not go over well. He recalled the rest of his set being electrifying and remained calm. The rest of it featured voices of cartoon characters, his own jokes, jokes from other comedians, riffs and improvisation. He returned to the art form in his 20s. He was more consistent, when he turned 30.

Alvin Newsome: Honestly—I've always admired the art form and I was looking for a challenge, before I turned 30. So, oddly enough I didn't go straight in. I actually started boxing, training and prepping for a fight. Some things fell through. In May of 2014—I figured, let me push through and try this. I honestly am grateful stuff didn't work out with boxing and I found my passion in stand-up. |

Marlénas McMahon-Purk: I did improv from my teens through my early 20s. People kept saying I should go into stand-up. I feel like a lot of New Yorkers are stand-up comedians from birth, so it was hard for me to wrap my mind around the concept that I would be dedicating time to perfecting things I might say on any day. Peer pressure won one day on the Lower East Side and I’m really enjoying the journey. |

Sareth Ney: What inspired you to perform stand-up comedy?
Brendan James: I had always wanted to do comedy. I was always funny as a kid but I realized my comedy came from a place of necessity of easing tension in my family. I never realized that until later. I had performed once 15 years ago but it was a series of events that happened to me in 10 days that gave me the drive to do it. So in 10 days these events happened to me: 1 - I broke up with my GF of 12 years. 2 - I lost my apartment and 90% of my possessions. 3 - I lost an uncle (my father's brother) who was failing with cancer. 4 - I broke my leg wrestling at the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) gym, in an attempt to lose weight. I was over 270 lbs. 5 - I needed surgery to repair the severe ankle trauma and fractured tibia. 6 - A few months later, I lost my accounting job. |

Sareth Ney: What inspired you to perform stand-up comedy?
Frank Failla: I started comedy two years ago, at the age of 48. I will always try something new. I guess I was inspired to do comedy because I have always been funny. I used to "heckle" comics by "enhancing" their jokes. After a show—one of the comics came up to me and said, "You're very funny, you should take a class." So about 20 years later, I took a comedy class with my son who was 15 at the time because I noticed he was a bit shy. I thought this would help him overcome that. I grew up a complete introvert and I did not want the same for him. |

Sareth Ney: What inspired you to perform stand-up comedy?
SN: What was the feeling like, when you first performed stand-up comedy? Sleazy Vegetable Joe: Let's see, questions one and two kind of go together. I hate to sound cliché but I was inspired by friends. They said I was funny and that I should try to do stand up. I was in a band that practiced very near to a club that had an open mic night. One day after practice, we went to the club (Tacoma Comedy Club) for a drink and to check it out. I saw a few funny people. Some were not as funny and thought to myself that I probably could do it. The place had about 40 people, plus the comics. So, I decided that the following week I would go up and try it. So much bravado. I saw the 40ish people and thought to myself that I had performed in front of thousands in my band, so this would be old hat. Simple. Boy, was I wrong. I wasn't nervous or scared. I had my set with me and when they called my name, I was eager to get on that stage. Then, there I was, alone and under a blinding light. My mind shut down. I stood there looking like a fool for about a minute and then left the stage having not said one joke. |
